I’d appreciate it if you could circulate to the Quarterly Meeting my invitation to join the 5th-12th grades for a wonderful performance next Wednesday. It is a play called “Show Me The Franklins!” written by a fascinating scholar and artist named Amanda Kemp. Here is a brief description which can be read at Meeting on Sunday if there is time during Announcements:
“This play introduces audiences to the conflicting documentary record of Benjamin Franklin as an apologist for slaveholding and as a champion of abolition. The play’s main character, Scholar, has emplyed an ensemble to imagine what happened where the documentary record leaves off. It is a moving performance that invites the audience to remember what is disturbing about our collective past and move towards healing and forgiveness. The play runs about 45 minutes and is followed by a Question and Answer session.”
There will also be an evening performance at a blackbox theater in midtown. I have attached a flyer with the event info, and the link below has a Paypal link to purchase tickets in advance. They are also available at the door for an additional $5.
Here is the bio for Amanda Kemp, who is inspirational in her own right:
We feel that this performance will spark dialogue and reflection within our community and would be honored to have members of the larger Quaker community join us if they are able.
Thank you! Please let me know if you have further questions, and I appreciate your making this information widely available.
