Friends Seminary Peace Week “Fabic of Peace” sculpture

To highlight this year’s Peace Week theme, “Beyond the Numbers: The Economics of Peace,” the Friends Seminary community will work with artist Derick Melander to create a beautiful textile sculpture from second hand clothing.
The purpose of the installation is to highlight just one thread of our waste consciousness: Clothing.
The installation encourages the average consumer to ask the questions:
* What does clothing signify in our culture?
* How much of what we own do we actually use?
* Of the clothing we own, how much do we really need?
* How can I help clothe someone in need?
* What are the environmental implications of clothing that is discarded into landfills?
* What does 386 million pounds of clothing look and feel like?
The Friends Seminary community will host a clothing drive from January 8th to February 1st. During this time we hope to collect approximately 1200 -1500 pounds of clothing (35-40 large garbage bags). On Saturday, February 6th from 3-8 pm and on Sunday, February 7th from 10am-5pm, students, parents, faculty, and staff are invited to participate in a two-day event to carefully fold and stack the clothing to create the sculpture, ”The Fabric of Peace”.
Folding coaches are also needed an hour before each session.
The sculpture installation will be dismantled at the end of the month and all the clothing will be donated to support the relief effort in Haiti.
Please contact Rachel Gomez to sign up for the workshop and to be a folding coach.

Invitation to “Show Me The Franklins!” at Friends Seminary

(click here to download the official flyer for the show)

Jesse Suzuki from Friends Seminary writes:

I’d appreciate it if you could circulate to the Quarterly Meeting my invitation to join the 5th-12th grades for a wonderful performance next Wednesday. It is a play called “Show Me The Franklins!” written by a fascinating scholar and artist named Amanda Kemp. Here is a brief description which can be read at Meeting on Sunday if there is time during Announcements:

“This play introduces audiences to the conflicting documentary record of Benjamin Franklin as an apologist for slaveholding and as a champion of abolition. The play’s main character, Scholar, has emplyed an ensemble to imagine what happened where the documentary record leaves off. It is a moving performance that invites the audience to remember what is disturbing about our collective past and move towards healing and forgiveness. The play runs about 45 minutes and is followed by a Question and Answer session.”

There will also be an evening performance at a blackbox theater in midtown. I have attached a flyer with the event info, and the link below has a Paypal link to purchase tickets in advance. They are also available at the door for an additional $5.

Here is the bio for Amanda Kemp, who is inspirational in her own right:

We feel that this performance will spark dialogue and reflection within our community and would be honored to have members of the larger Quaker community join us if they are able.

Thank you! Please let me know if you have further questions, and I appreciate your making this information widely available.
